Retha
Alberts has extensive experience in the areas of facilitation,
consultation and change management focusing on people and processes. Her
special interest is in leadership development and building the capacity
of people and teams. She integrates her passion for people development
by balancing an academic career with practical professional consultation
and facilitation. She works with a wide range of local and international
clients, i.e. in Africa, USA, Sweden, Belgium and The Netherlands. She
has published several articles in business science magazines.
Academic career
Retha has been a virtual
faculty member at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB)
since 1999. She is responsible for facilitating learning on Business
Ethics and Corporate Governance to international MBA- and other
students. She also facilitates Strategic Thinking and Leadership to
participants on executive and customized management development programs
at USB-ED.
She has been the Program Director and Learning Process Facilitator for
the international BOSAL Master Classes since 2006.
Since 2000, Retha has been contracted by AF Consult International in
Sweden as a faculty member on their Strategic Management Development
Programs. These programs are sponsored by SIDA (Swedish International
Development Agency), and focus on management development for delegates
from developing countries, including Africa, South America and
South-East Asia.
Professional career
Retha was previously with
ABSA Bank, where she was, inter alia, Market Manager for Local
Governments, and the Project Leader for the bank’s transformation
program in the Western Cape. She successfully initiated and chaired a
network for women in ABSA (“ABSANET”) and was the Chairman of the SA
Council for Businesswomen in 1997-98. During her career with ABSA, she
was elected to explore Management and Leadership Development in the USA
(Harvard Business School) and in Europe (Ashridge and Insead).
In 1997 ABSA Bank seconded her as the Managing Director of a black
women’s empowerment company. Together with her team, she established
this company and managed it successfully in order to hand over the
reigns as MD to a previously disadvantaged manager. She currently serves
as the Chairman of another black empowerment company, Prominent Holdings
(Pty) Ltd, which focuses on agricultural developments and job creation
for previously disadvantaged individuals.
In 1998 she founded her own business La Vita Nuova Learning and Capacity
Building. Her mission with this business enterprise is to contribute to
sustainable businesses and the meaningful development of the capacity of
individuals and teams. The core focus is organizational development
through the professional facilitation of strategic business processes,
leadership/management development and corporate governance/business
ethics.
She is a member of Tomorrow’s Company in the United Kingdom and
regularly works in close collaboration with other reputable local and
international consultants who share her commitment for the development
of people and of organizations. Retha is internationally accredited to
assess and coach people in The Leadership Circle (www.theleadershipcircle.com),
Barrett’s Values, Emotional Intelligence and MyersBriggs (MBTI).
Academic background
Masters Degree in
Philosophy (MPhil in Decision-making, Knowledge Dynamics and Values)
from the University of Stellenbosch (Thesis: “Spirituality and Business
Leadership”).
Diploma: Strategic Leadership, Cum Laude from California State
University
